The Problem

  • Falls in bathrooms and bedrooms are common and time-sensitive, but often unseen until it is too late.
  • Wearables are often not worn during showers.
  • Traditional cameras create major privacy concerns in private spaces.
  • The presentation cites CDC data that roughly 80% of bathroom injuries are caused by falls.

Prototype: Lumisafe

  • End-to-end encrypted device for fall risk alerts.
  • Time-of-Flight distance sensors that only capture room depth.
  • Edge AI that improves locally with personalized environments.
  • Data is processed on-device all the time.
  • Simple app workflow for caregivers and families.

The Solution

SafeSteps OC is a community deployment initiative focused on timely fall detection. The team installs Lumisafe in homes with seniors who live alone and pairs installation with prevention-focused training.

Caretakers can receive alerts and provide check-ins around the clock, helping people stay safer without giving up privacy.

Privacy and Trust

  • No video is collected.
  • Sensor information is processed locally at all times.
  • Edge AI inference stays on-device.
  • Alerts trigger only for high-confidence events.

Continuous real-time analysis

  • Pose estimator performance on depth amplitude images is reported as stronger than Google MediaPipe.
  • IUSD Science Fair: First Place.
  • Google igniteCS Programming Expo: First Place.
  • Lumisafe papers accepted by IIKI 2025 and ICCCM 2026 (publication pending).
  • U.S. provisional patent application No. 63/895,972.

Deployment Plan

  • Work with 1 to 2 local partner organizations.
  • Standardize hardware package, mounting, and setup.
  • Make onboarding repeatable with quick-start guides and pairing labels.
  • Recruit and train 4 to 6 volunteers for scheduling and installation support.
  • Track reliability, false alerts, uptime, response time, and satisfaction.

Sustainability

With mentorship resources and funding from DKF, SafeSteps OC plans to reach 28 homes in phase one. The program is designed to continue through ongoing local partnerships.

Basic safety features remain free. An optional $5.99/month subscription helps cover software costs.
